II. Methods

A.Subjects

We included in the study all male clients who completed their program participation between February 1986 and February 1988, if they had attended at least one group session after intake. The initial pool of clients included 99 men and their partners at the time of entry to the program. In all, we interviewed 53 women. We failed to reach 32 women, either because telephones were disconnected, they had moved, or no one answered (up to 30 attempts were made to contact them). Fourteen of the women declined to participate.

The average age of the women interviewed is 35.8 years (S.D. = 7.6). They are predominantly white, with an average education of 12.9 years (S.D. = 1.9). Thirty-nine of the women worked outside the home, 21 fulltime. Forty of the women still live with the men who had abused them.

The average age of the partners of the women interviewed is 37.2 years (S.D. = 8.0). Forty-eight are white. The men completed an average of 12.1 years (S.D. = 2.1) of school. The men participated in an average of 12 sessions (S.D. = 9.2).
